This is one of a series of recent oil paintings articulating lost or corrupted innocence. The subject is appropriated from a found photograph, depicting what appear to be the mundane and prosaic events and incidents of everyday life; however, separated from contextual references with both the subject and origin unknown, an absurd and unwholesome ambiguity is allowed to emerge. By re-presenting an image that is initially perceived as unproblematic, the viewer is encouraged to invent possible narratives: fantasy revives the scene, allowing innuendo and a heightened sense of drama to extend meaning beyond what is depicted. Fantasy, then, is co-opted so as to return the viewer to reality, and to consider the banal and quotidian in new terms. The painting’s realism becomes a means to not only engage the potential of imagination, but to explore the potential for significance.
