I started this effort around 11 am while the trees were still in shadow and the wind in the valley was fitfully calm. The water surface was smooth and black during a lull in the breeze but was slightly rippled and reflected the sky whenever a fit of wind worked its way through the valley. The calm and flat surface reflected the dark trees of the far shore of the lake.
There were many moose tracks in the sand. Nancy and George Sheffield had seen a bull moose when they started their canoe trip three days previous. They had come out a day early because of the rainy forecast. That is why everyone needs their own meteorologist on every excursion. It didn't rain and they could have enjoyed another day in the woods.
