"Racing Sunrise"

One of the best times to paint is the morning. I am very much a morning person so it is a good combination, sometimes. The surface cold front had already gone by and fragments of stratus were whipping by the window and being torn apart and whorled as they went. A darker, layered bank of clouds on the western horizon was probably along the upper frontal surface. There were subtle north to south gravity waves embedded in the cloud revealing the stable layer under the cold frontal surface. The dark colour of this cloud bank is likely the result of the large particle size of the ice cloud and plus the direct sunlight wasn't illuminating it yet. The distant horizon was seeing the morning sun however.

The sunrise colours would be difficult to use in determining whether this is a view to the east or west. I looked to the east and the sky colours weren't all that different.
