Misty Copeland, la primera afroamericana en ser promovida a bailarina principal en el American Ballet Theatre (una de las principales compañías de ballet clásico del mundo), ha sido pionera en el mundo del ballet.
Su madre era profesora de ballet y creció viéndola bailar. Su profesor de ballet también le dijo que no era lo suficientemente buena como para dedicarse a la danza profesional y "los negros no tienen motivos para hacer ballet clásico".
