Según la mitología japonesa los sacerdotes que destacaban por su orgullo al morir se tornaban en espíritus llamados Tengus.

Vestidos de rojo, con una nariz alargada que simbolizaba su desmedido orgullo.

Dominaban los vientos y si eran irritados podrían ocasionar tempestades.

Junto a estos podía haber unos tengus menores a su servicio que parecían tener pico de pájaro por boca.
