Antiguamente conocida como Plaza de San Salvador, la Plaza de la Villa fue el centro neurálgico de la actual ciudad de Madrid en tiempos medievales. De reducidas dimensiones, en su contorno se sitúan algunas de las edificaciones más antiguas y señoriales de la población. Destacan la denominada Casa de la Villa, palacio del siglo XVII adquirido por el consistorio madrileño para ser usado como Ayuntamiento, función que ejerció durante más de tres siglos.
