Combining suprematism and Art Nouveau styles, this artwork depicts the story of Okiagari-koboshi or "The Maiden's Castle". According to the legend, a powerful daimyo (feudal lord) built a castle in the middle of a lake to protect his daughter, since he believed that his daughter was in danger of being kidnapped or killed by an evil suitor. However, one day the daughter fell ill and the daimyo went to the mainland to seek help, leaving her alone in the castle. This piece represent the previous moment in which the evil suitor was waiting to attack the castle and, eventually, kill the daughter. The legend says that on a quiet night, you can hear the voice of the daughter calling out from the lake.
