The massive sand dune that rises in the foreground divides the picture into two diagonally contrasting halves with its curved contour. Fine brushstrokes indicate the structures moulded by the wind in the sand. The left side of the dune is in shadow and is depicted in deep brown and almost black tones, creating a dramatic effect of depth. The sky above the desert landscape shines in a clear, intense blue, which forms a strong contrast to the warm earth tones of the dunes. On the horizon, the sky and desert merge in a slight blur, emphasising the vastness and heat of the scenery. This work impressively conveys the overwhelming beauty and loneliness of the desert.
