La iglesia es original del siglo XVIII, este templo es un tesoro patrimonial de Sudamérica. Junto a los volcanes Parinacota y Pomerape llamados payachatas,, Parinacota constituye uno de los más bellos paisajes de la Región de Chile.
La iglesia es de piedra y argamasa de barro, sus tijerales son de eucaliptus y la cubierta de paja brava (coirón).
A fines del siglo XVI, comenzaron a llegar a Tarapacá los primeros misioneros, que acometieron el desafío de evangelizar a los indígenas del lugar, construyendo para tal efecto templos cuyo diseño y construcción se insertan dentro del estilo barroco mestizo del área andina.
Este poblado de Parinacota se encuentra situado a 4.400 metros sobre el nivel del mar.
