Inicialmente, en la cosmografía del sistema ptolemaico, solo Mercurio y Venus fueron considerados "planetas interiores" o "inferiores" mientras que Marte fue catalogado entre los exteriores. Ptolomeo hizo una distinción entre los planetas ubicados entre la Tierra y el Sol (Mercurio y Venus considerados en órbita), y los que se encontraban más allá del Sol.

Posteriormente, Nicolás Copérnico modificó esta definición para adaptarla a su teoría heliocéntrica. Los pequeños planetas rocosos cercanos al sol sería los planetas interiores y los gigantes gaseosos lejanos al sol lo exteriores.
