Artwork description

CUNTIS CHURCH (PONTEVEDRA - SPAIN) The parish of Santa María de Cuntis has a very long history. The settlement in the area has been known since the earliest times thanks to the castro of Castrolandín. Later, it was its thermal waters that made the region famous and were used to their advantage by the Romans. Before us is a recent temple, of neoclassical origin. The Cuntis church is located in the center of the capital and is surrounded by a fantastic park. Next to it we have the rectory and what is known as "hospitalillo" which today houses the municipal library.

It is known of the existence of an old monastery of which some remains can still be seen included in the church of Santa María de Cuntis. We find news of this already in the year 1101 when the same Abbot Pedro appears in 1101 mentioned in a privilege granted by Bishop Xelmírez to the church of San Estevo de Piadela (Betanzos). His signature appears again in 1116 in a ruling by Doña Urraca in relation to a lawsuit with the Carboeiro monastery. In 1159 the church of Santa María de Cuntis became part of the assets of Santiago.
The current work is from the 18th century and in it we can see some details of the old building. The existence of a tombstone inserted in the wall stands out where you can read an inscription marking the year 1116 (1078). Inside, the Christ and an image of Saint Sebastian stand out, attributed to the sculptor Ferreiro.

Attention

This work measures 45*35 cm and comes with a fine black frame and Pas partu.
