De los ocho representantes de la familia felidae, Felis colocolo o gato montés, Felis concolor o puma, Felis geoffroyi, Felis pardalis o jaguarete’i, Felis tigrina o tirica, Felis wiedii o margay, Felis yagouarundi o jaguarundí, Panthera onca o jaguarete, los llamados gatos manchados son los más amenazados de extinción, pues son utilizados en la industria peletera. Resaltemos que entre los representantes de la familia de la familia felidae que no entran en la categoría de gatos manchados es el puma, llamado también león americano o jagua pyta (felis concolor) y el jaguarundí (felis jaguoarundi) conocido también con el nombre de mbaracayá eirá, ya que se le asemeja bastante al eirá que es un mustélido.
