Los antiguos museos tenían un olor a alcanfor y trementina porque sus puertas se hacían de madera originaria de Borneo. Generalmente eran fríos, y sus paredes, muy gruesas y altas, sostenian techos adornados con pinturas al fresco ya deterioradas por el tiempo, proveyendo al lugar el aspecto de un antiguo y lujoso palacio.
