Aunque se la utilizó en todo el río de la Plata - y aún en Brasil - no existe absoluta certeza sobre el origen de la palabra gaucho.
Es probable que el vocablo quichua huachu (huérfano, vagabundo) haya sido transformado por los colonizadores españoles utilizándose para llamar gauchos a los vagabundos y guachos a los huérfanos.
Fue el hombre de nuestro campo, principal escenario de su vida legendaria y real. De vida solitaria ya en grupos de tiendas, como las tribus nómades ya en racheríos aislados como en la pampa sureña.
