El cuadro muestra a un león alimentadose de un búfalo que probablemente el propio león a abatido en algún lugar del remoto Serengueti africano. Recordemos que el león macho cuando llega a cierta edad es expulsado de su manada y vaga solo por las sabanas y estepas africanas o forma coaliciones con otros machos de su especie, buscan territorio propio con hembras a las que dominar.
