PRESENTACIÓN

El matachín es un elemento de la cultura popular del Tolima Grande, sin desconocer, por supuesto, su presencia en otras latitudes como México y otros países de Centroamérica, África y España.
En el Tolima Grande tiene una significación especial pues la danza de los Matachines representa la lucha entre los espíritus protectores precolombinos, convertidos en maléficos por la colonización española y su abanderada la religión católica, y el diablo, símbolo del mal en el cristianismo. Los espíritus protectores precolombinos encarnan en animales y entablan la eterna lucha para derrotar al diablo. De forma simbólica, los Matachines son la lucha ancestral por la supervivencia de una cultura aborigen diezmada por la evangelización.
