La leyenda de San Jorge y el dragón nos cuenta cómo San Jorge cabalgó hacia la ciudad de Silene, la actual Libia, donde encontró a las gentes aterrorizadas por un dragón que era alimentado diariamente con uno de sus ciudadanos. La siguiente víctima iba a ser Cleolinda, hija del Rey, pero San Jorge montó su caballo y fue en busca del dragón al cual asesinó liberando así al pueblo de su opresor.
