*La cultura griega , explicaba todas las enfermedades y los cambios de temperamento o "humor" a partir de la influencia de cuatro líquidos corporales denominados "humores": la sangre, la flema, la bilis negra y la bilis amarilla. Según esta teoría propuesta por Hipócrates, un exceso de sangre estimulaba comportamientos hiperactivos (maníacos, en la terminología actual), mientras que el exceso de bilis negra provocaba un comportamiento abatido, apático y un manifiesto sentimiento de desolación. El término "bilis negra" pasó a convertirse en sinónimo de tristeza y depresión.
