Artwork description

Once regarded as one of the largest Mental Asylums in Europe, Whittingham became home for around 3500 patients. During the 1970?s, improvements in mental health research combined with allegations of cruelty to patients eventually lead to the demise of the Asylum. Whittingham closed its doors for good in 1995.

Artist information

I took an interest in photography in 2003 after being inspired by landscape scenes of the places I visited when traveling. It was studying for my degree, whilst documenting the ruins of an old asylum, that I recognised how I might use my photography to try and convey a range of meanings, themes and thoughts.
