Su marido fue fusilado, era tan pobre que su hija tuvo que ir a un orfanato y murió de hambre allí internada, las enfermedades se cebaron con la familia, el frío era el amigo diario, jamás encontró vivienda ni trabajo, sufrió la desaprobación y persecución oficial y a pesar de ello consiguió transmitir en su obra calor y valentía. En 1941 Marina, muy deteriorada, fue evacuada a Tartaristán muy donde se ahorcó.
