Es una de las dos grandes lagunas alto-andinas existentes en Colombia y en los Andes del Norte. Forma parte de la gran cuenca amazónica, donde el río Guamués fluye al oriente hacia las tierras bajas del Putumayo, siendo río el principal afluente del río Putumayo.
Enclavada en la zona andina del sur de Colombia, conocida como Nudo de los Pastos, de origen volcánico, la laguna posee ecosistemas únicos en el país y en el mundo, tales como los páramos azonales (a 2760 msnm), juncales y bosques alto-andinos siempre verdes y nublados, poseedores de una altísima biodiversidad tanto animal como vegetal; además, estos ecosistemas albergan una gran cantidad de especies de aves migratorias tanto del norte como del sur (australes).

That is one of the two great existing high-Andean lagoons in Colombia and the $andes of the North. Form leaves from the great amazonian river basin, where the Guamués river flows to the east towards low territories of the Putumayo, being river the main affluent of the Putumayo river. Nailed in the Andean zone of the south of Colombia, well-known like Knot of the Grass, volcanic origin, the lagoon has unique ecosystems in the country and the world, such as the azonales deserts (to 2760 msnm), always green juncales and high-Andean forests and storm clouds, possessors of a highest biodiversity as much animal as vegetal; in addition, these ecosystems as much lodge a great amount of migratory species of birds of the north as of the south (austral). The nature of my region shaped in this photo, it plants and the animals live here in a calm harmony
