Tomatillo o tomate verde variedad ácida del tomate. Jitomate del náhuatl xictli, ombligo y tomátl, tomate, tomate de ombligo, viajó a Europa en 1540 desde México, Tenochtitlan, capital del imperio azteca, actualmente conocido en todo el mundo como tomate. En el centro de México al rojo se le llama jitomate, y al verde tomatillo o tomate verde. En el Norte de México se conoce como tomate al rojo y jitomate al verde.
