Barbecued Lamb
In the beach area around Veracruz City it has become customary to feast on the delicious barbecued lamb. This tradition began in the northern states of Mexico and has now arrived in the State of Veracruz to stay. This succulent meat is prepared by slow broiling over glowing charcoal embers. When you go by one of these establishments you immediately notice that the air is impregnated with the tasty aroma of charcoal and exquisite barbecue sauce. The sauce is prepared with chili peppers and meat juice and tastes like something out of this world. And, there?s no need to say it, the meat is soft and juicy. In these same restaurants it is also customary to prepare ?Birria? and lamb meat tacos. If you?re ever in the neighborhood in the State of Veracruz be sure to try some. You?ll never repent of it.
I painted this drawing in black and white with charcoal. I found the place purely by coincidence. It is situated along the highway that goes to the village of Anton Lizardo. When I saw it I parked my car and walked up to investigate. It was in the late afternoon just before dark when the sun shone its intense and magical yellowish coloring. The chiaroscuros of light and shade stood out and gave the place a touch of mystery. This restaurant was abandoned and in ruins. It no longer was in operation and the sandy dunes had invaded every inch of the old building. The pickup which appears to be on the grill was also abandoned and quite dilapidated. In the back you can see a crooked tree with no leaves having been desolated by the violent northern winds that frequently tear down the Veracruz beaches.
I stayed just long enough to finish my sketch and to take a few pictures. The resultant work today hangs in a privileged place in my home. In spite of the awkwardness of my drawing, I still think it to be one of my better paintings. Today, this old restaurant building, ?Barbacoa de Borrego?, no longer exists and where it had been there is now a four lane highway. Tough luck.
Since I can remember I have had an urge to express myself artistically. As a young student, I was interested in sports, singing and theater. In my years at West Bend High School, I was selected to sing in the school choir, to play trumpet in the school band and to act in the school musical productions.
