Artwork description

The Eternity, Léogâne. Haiti

A new sculpture symbolising ?Eternity? has been installed actually in Léogâne city near to the embassy of South Korea in Port-au-Prince, created by the Haitian artist Robert Luxama.
Comprising swirling white forms, the work suggests movement, perpetual rebirth, and a nurturing relationship between the physical and the spiritual. The structure stands 1.9 metres tall, and its base is broad and can be seen to resemble a womb or even an egg protected by a snake. The sculpture reaches upwards from this symbolism of Mother Earth in swirling, white marble to a circular peak, and in the sunlight that penetrates this we can read both the spirit and the intellect.
The image of the circle has represented eternity for millennia, and taken as a whole the sculpture also suggests both the mathematical infinity symbol in its swirling, rhythmic form, but also the Uroboros; the snake eating its own tail which also symbolises endless time. The idea of eternity is important in philosophy, mathematics, and religion, and to Robert Luxama the creation embodies the perpetual relationship between heaven and Earth, and between God and Man.
One can also read into the sculpture the dynamic between the microcosm and macrocosm, but the startling, swanlike beauty of the work suggests another idea: that of a form or an aspiration whose grace is both within and outside of time. In this way the Eternity can be seen as a reflection of spirituality, and of the efforts made by individuals and peoples in their lives, efforts that reach towards enlightenment and cooperation.
Robert Luxama says: ?the work further represents friendship, and the relations - intellectual, spiritual and material - between two beings or entities. It also symbolises the connection between two thoughts, and between two countries or peoples.?
The sculpture is the fruit of warm relations for 50 years between Haiti and South Korea, the country which funded the project, and reflects the commitment of both states to a future of cooperation.
Artist, sculptor, filmmaker and musician Robert Luxama studied art at the National Visual Arts School of Santo Domingo and the National Fine Arts School of Port-au-Prince in Haiti.
