Según Martínez Rufino, “a partir de que la empresa Costco adquirió el inmueble para construir un enorme centro comercial y con la cimentación de éste, el Casino de la Selva comenzó a ser demolido junto con el patrimonio cultural ahí ubicado”. A principios de julio (2001), -señala el diputado-, se inició la demolición formal del Casino con autorización de la Secretaría de Desarrollo Urbano y Obras Públicas; hecho que permitió la destrucción de al menos 200 metros de murales creados por prestigiados pintores como Renau, Ballester, el Doctor Atl, Jorge Flores, José Reyes Meza y otros más.2/12
