La obra esta basada en la ambición del hombre, la cual es tan grande que quiere sobrepasar los limites sin importar las consecuencias. De ese modo, se representa el árbol seco como la muerte de la naturaleza y a un extremo del cuadro se presenta la gran ciudad como la soberbia. Sin embargo, se ilustra los ríos de agua saliendo de las nubes, los cuales representan la purificación de los pecados del hombre.
