Esta ave, tan característica de México, aunque se da en toda América, disfrutó de un lugar privilegiado en la cosmogonía prehispánica, tanto los mexicas como los mayas lo relacionaron con los dioses, quizá la más hermosa sea la leyenda maya, según la cual el colibrí fue creado a partir de una piedra de jade a la que los dioses dieron forma de pequeña flecha y le insuflaron vida, su labor sería la de llevar los deseos y pensamientos de los dioses.
