Esta obra constituye una especie de "vanitas" junto a la anterior. Ésta representa la vejez y la muerte. El ajedrez es una batalla que termina con la muerte del rey, diametralmente opuesto al también hindú parchís. El reloj representa, obviamente, el paso del tiempo y la chapa con la calavera, la muerte. Abundan el blanco y el negro en contraste con el otro cuadro al que complementa. Ambos cuadros tienen una composición simétrica. La clave es el tablero, que tiene una doble cara, como la propia vida.
