El caballo pinto es una raza originaria de los Estados Unidos. Fueron los indios pieles rojas quienes iniciaron su cría, buscando caballos más salvajes para poderlos cruzar con caballos españoles. Los caballos pintos cruzados con la raza Quarter Horse originaron el Paint Horse, caballo muy similar al Pinto, pero con características propias del Quarter.
