Bin bags and commercial disposals have become central subjects in my recent series of work. I am interested in how quickly we perceive and label what?s around us; what?s beautiful and what?s not, what?s useful and what?s wasteful... we instinctively categorise what deserves attention and what we take for granted. With this piece of work I want to challenge those perceptions, giving greater status to subjects that would perhaps otherwise go unnoticed.
My artistic practice enables me to place an ordinary ?Bin Bag? in the spotlight and bring attention to it, allowing it to be observed and hopefully create a dialogue with the viewer. Perhaps the iridescent inflections will catch your eye but what is concealed behind the thin plastic skin? Snippets of a lifestyle? Tonnes of which mingle and are dramatically dumped into landfills every year.
David Agenjo (b. Madrid, 1977) is a painter who lives and works in London. In the context of contemporary figurative painting, he is best known for his compelling colour palette where personal colour arrangements and interpretations take his subjects beyond realism. Throughout his career he has evolved his practice from an intimate exploration of the human form, to a broader contextualisation of figures and, most recently, to still life paintings.
