Hasta fines del siglo XIX esta iglesia era el centro urbano del poblado que trabajaba en torno a la fundición de cobre, perteneciente a la familia Urmeneta Errázuriz. Esta fundición ya no existe y su iglesia, ahora capilla, constituye un testimonio del tipo de arquitectura metálica en Chile.
