Artwork description

This installation is concerned with the condition of people ‘lost at sea’ or ‘lost in transit’. Initially inspired by a long-standing ambition to make an artwork on the sagas of ‘the coffin ships’ of the 1830’s, these were ships that sailed the Atlantic ocean, carrying emigrants escaping the Irish Potatoe Famine. People were and still are, desperate for better opportunities and for a greater quality of life.

The figures at the centre are perhaps dealing illicitly on those hopes and the utter desperation of those seeking refuge. Perhaps they are confabulating arbiters of aid – sensing that they must be seen to have offered ‘some assistance’.

Yet more likely is that these represent the lost souls, staring into one another’s faces in which they see only a reflection of their doom-ridden situation – these are the silent witnesses.
