Las características del arte abstracto son en general las estructuras y aspectos cromáticos sin preocuparse en representar de forma figurativa, las formas naturales. Siendo así, las obras llamadas abstractas, existen independiente del mundo real, de los modelos reales y se preocupa solamente en crear sus propios significados por medio de un lenguaje visual expresivo, capaz de provocar muchas interpretaciones.
Vale recordar que esa cierta distancia que la abstracción tiene de la realidad no es una regla; ella muchas veces puede ser casi imperceptible, ligera o completa. Las líneas y colores son utilizados para crean composiciones originales, escapando de una perfecta representación.
Ese movimiento artístico se niega a imitar el mundo exterior y se basa solamente en los pensamientos del artista.
