Esta pintura representa el Monocordio que fué utilizado por Pitágoras cerca del año 550 A.C. Significa literalmente una secuencia; es decir que una sola cuerda se estira sobre una caja de sonidos. En el siglo XVI, Robert Fludd, ideó un Monocordio que llamó Celestial o Divino, donde representó el Universo de Claudio Tolomeo, adaptado a los intervalos musicales. Se utiliza para ilustrar las características matemáticas del tono musical.
