The 55th edition of The Venice Biennale has started and this year, until November 24th, we will be able to visit one of the most important art events worldwide: its International Contemporary Art Exhibition
88 countries participate in this edition, and some of them do so for the first time as Ivory Coast, Republic of Kosovo, Paraguay and the Vatican. The Vatican takes part for the first time with a project based on The Genesis, which has been developed by the Studio Azzurro, Josep Koudelka and Lawrence Carroll.
Other outstanding proposals are: Germany, represented by the highly anticipated Ai WeiWei among other representatives; Portugal, by Joana Vasconcelos; Brazil, by Hélio Fervenza and Lygia Clark, among others; Chile, by Alfredo Jaar; Argentina, by Nicola Costantino; México, by Ariel Guzik; Cuba, by Pedro Costa and Rui Chafes, among others; Venezuela, by the group of Venezuelan urban artists; Korea, by Kimsooja; United States, by Sarah Sze and the United Arab Emirates by Mohammed Kazem.
Visitors can not only see the national pavilions, but also several Venetian museums and interesting art spaces (Tàpies in the Fortuny Museum for example) which are worthy to visit. Following the official programme, there are two outstanding initiatives. There is a big exhibition in The Encyclopaedic Palace, where the work by 150 artists from 37 different nationalities is shown. Their work is closely related by their artistic practices and themes to that of the American artists Carl Andre, Wade Guyton and Duane Hanson; the British Tacita Dean and Sarah Lucas; the Polish Miroslaw Balka; the French Roger Caillois; the Swiss Peter Fischli and David Weiss; the German Rosemarie Trockel or the Chinese Kan Xuan. The second proposal is the Biennale Sessions, in order to promote a new approach to the institutions that make research on art and the universities and beaux arts academies, by offering educational activities in group around the different events of the Biannale.
