Following the success of the exhibitions that the organisations they represent have jointly organised in Spain in recent years, Isidre Fainé, president of ”la Caixa”, and Henri Loyrette, president and director of the Louvre Museum, have signed a new cooperation agreement to produce four more shows over the next four years.
Under this agreement, the CaixaForum centres in Madrid, Barcelona, Saragossa, Palma, Girona, Tarragona and Lleida will host exhibitions featuring works from the Louvre Museum collections and jointly organised by the two organisations.
The Madrid and Barcelona centres will present two shows between 2014 and 2016: a major retrospective on the work of one of the most influential of nineteenth-century French painters, Jacques Luis David, who started under the Ancien Régime, embraced the French Revolution and ended up as a supporter of Napoleon; and an archaeological exhibition exploring the importance of the bestiary in Pharaonic Egypt.
Two further exhibitions will also be organised under the agreement: a completely new show devoted to Charles Le Brun, based on the large cartoons that the French painter produced for the Hall of Mirrors in Versailles, restored especially for the occasion; and an exhibition of Roman antiquities illustrating the role played by women in architectural decoration.
