(Pisa 1202-1258)
Giunta di Capitino, also known as Giunta da Pisa or Giunta Pisano, was an Italian painter active in Pisa between 1241 and 1254. In his poignant images of the crucified Christ, a deep influence of Byzantine expressionism is manifested (Santa Maria degli Angeli in Assisi, and Santo Spirito in Pisa). His masterpiece is the imposing Crucifix (1250) in the left transept of the Basilica of Saint Dominic in Bologna.
Pisano painted in the upper church of Assisi, especially a Crucifixion dated 1236, featuring a figure of Father Elias, the general of the Franciscans, embracing the foot of the cross. These Byzantine-style frescoes were likely created in collaboration with Greek artists. In the sacristy, there is a portrait of Saint Francis, also attributed to Giunta Pisano; however, it is more likely to belong to the late 13th century.
It is said that he practiced his art from 1202 to 1236. Giunta Pisano usually painted on canvas stretched over wood, prepared with plaster.
