Biography

(Valdibiena 1486 - Siena 1551)

The Italian painter and sculptor Beccafumi was one of the most important figures of the first Tuscan Mannerism. Beccafumi was influenced by Michelangelo and his style is characterized by a chromatic lyricism and an emotional intensity that were very personal.

He worked in Florence and Genoa but the bulk of his artworks were realized and remain in Siena (paintings from the Communal Palace [1529 - 1535] and the frescoes in the Bindi-Segardi Palace; the mosaics of the pavement of the cathedral of Siena, the painting Birth of the Virgin Mary and other artworks which are in the Pinacoteca Nazionale). His artworks can be found in museums in Berlin, Dresden, London, Munich, Naples, Rome, Pisa, Washington, etc. He also worked as a sculptor, and we have Statues of Angels, a sculpture made of bronze which is in the Siena Cathedral, as an example.
